Connecting a league to Discord

ODL Manager can post fixtures, results and league tables directly to your Discord server.

You do not need to add a Discord bot. ODL Manager uses Discord webhooks to send posts to the channels you choose. We cannot read messages or access other channels in your server.

What you need

Before connecting Discord, you will need:

  • A Discord server where you have permission to Manage Webhooks.
  • At least one division set up in your league.
  • To be the league owner or a moderator.

Division hosts can post league information once Discord has been configured, but cannot change the league's Discord connections.

Discord channels

Each division can have separate channels for:

Channel Used for
Fixtures Upcoming fixtures and rounds
Results Completed or partially completed rounds
Table Division standings

All three are optional.

You can use separate Discord channels for each type of post, or connect the same channel to all three.

Connecting a channel

1. Create a webhook in Discord

Open the Discord channel you want to use, then:

  1. Open Edit Channel.
  2. Go to Integrations → Webhooks.
  3. Select New Webhook.
  4. Give the webhook a suitable name, such as ODL Manager or your league name.
  5. Select Copy Webhook URL.

2. Connect it to ODL Manager

In ODL Manager:

  1. Open your league.
  2. Select Discord.
  3. Find the division and type of post you want to connect.
  4. Select Set.
  5. Paste the Discord webhook URL.
  6. Select Connect.

ODL Manager checks the webhook with Discord when it is saved. Invalid or unavailable webhooks will not be connected.

3. Test the connection

Once connected, use Test to send a test message to Discord.

This is particularly useful when setting up several divisions, as it confirms that each connection points to the channel you intended.

Connections carry between seasons

Discord connections belong to the division rather than an individual season.

If your league uses the same divisions next season, their Discord connections will remain in place.

You can add, replace or remove connections at any time from the league's Discord page.

Webhook security

A Discord webhook URL allows messages to be posted to its channel, so it should be treated as a secret.

  • Do not share webhook URLs publicly or include them in screenshots.
  • ODL Manager stores webhook URLs encrypted.
  • Saved URLs are not displayed again. They can only be Replaced or Removed.
  • If a webhook URL is exposed, delete or reset the webhook in Discord and connect the new one to ODL Manager.

Removing a connection from ODL Manager stops us using that webhook, but does not delete the webhook itself from Discord.

Posting to Discord

Once Discord is connected, open a division and select Copy for Discord or Facebook.

Where a suitable Discord channel is available, you will also see Post to Discord.

ODL Manager selects the appropriate connection based on what you are posting:

  • Standings use the Table channel.
  • Upcoming rounds use the Fixtures channel.
  • Rounds containing results use the Results channel.

You can change the destination using Post to before sending.

Nothing is posted automatically. A league moderator or division host must choose Post to Discord each time.

If something goes wrong

Message What it means
That is not a Discord webhook address. The address entered is not a Discord webhook URL. Check that you copied the Webhook URL, rather than the channel URL.
Discord has no such webhook. Check the URL and copy it again. Discord does not recognise the webhook. It may have been copied incorrectly or deleted.
That webhook has been revoked in Discord. The webhook is no longer available. Create or copy a new webhook and use Replace.
That channel is gone from Discord. Set the webhook again. The connected channel or webhook has since been removed from Discord.
Discord did not answer. Try again in a moment. Discord could not be reached. Try the post again shortly.
Discord is rate limiting this channel. Too many messages have been sent in a short period. Try again shortly.
Post a single round rather than the lot. The post is too large for a single Discord message. Post individual rounds instead.

If the webhook name shown in ODL Manager is out of date after you rename it in Discord, use Test to refresh the connection details.

What ODL Manager can access

The Discord integration is one-way.

ODL Manager:

  • can post through the webhooks you connect;
  • cannot read messages from your Discord server;
  • cannot access channels you have not connected;
  • does not post anything automatically.
